WHAT ARE ACID 1 AND ACID 2?

Acid 1
• Dissolves base metals such as copper, silver, nickel, iron, zinc, and changes certain metals to metal oxides – aluminum, chromium, tin.
• Does not react with gold and the platinum group metals.

Acid 2
• Dissolves aluminum, tin.
• Does not react with copper, silver, gold, and the platinum group metals.

TESTING METHOD

• Step 1
• The sample is scratched on a test stone.
• Acid 1 is applied to the scratch mark.
• If the color of the scratch disappears, the tested metal is not gold.
• If the color of the scratch remains, it is likely that the tested metal is gold.

• Step 2
• Acid 2 is applied to the scratch mark (after applying Acid 1).
• The scratch mark of 585 gold (14K) will disappear almost immediately.
• The scratch mark of higher purity gold (>585) will start to disappear – the higher the purity, the slower the color of the scratch mark will fade.
